How to Deal With Negative People

There’s one thing I know for sure, and that’s negative people zap energy and diffuse ambition and joy.

When I feel my energy shifting, I need only look around me to understand what triggered the sudden change.

It’s a fact that every choice you make is influenced by the people in your life. If you’re unhappy and struggle to get and stay motivated, take a look at the people you spend the most time with.

People affect your energy level and have a HUGE impact on your motivation and happiness.

According to motivational speaker and self-help guru Jim Rohn, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.

One recent study goes as far to say that who you hang with has a significant impact on your self-worth and happiness. Thomas C. Corley, studied the habits of self-made millionaires for five years and found that this group avoids one type of person at all costs: Pessimists.

It’s time to identify the negative influencers in your life and create space for positive change.

Here are three steps that can help you surround yourself with people who motivate you, offer words of support and encouragement, listen non judgmentally to your ideas and love you unconditionally:

  1. Identify the negative people.

You’ll know who they are right away because when you speak with them your chest tightens and your mood starts to shift. Negative people make you feel badly about yourself, shoot down your ideas, goals and decisions. They make you feel stressed and frustrated and put doubts in your head.

  1. Set boundaries.

Once they’ve been identified start to distance yourself from them — you don’t have to explain why. Limit the amount of time you spend around them. If they bring you down, you may want to let them go all together. Remember, negative people cause you to be stressed and anxious, which affects your health. Setting boundaries will have a positive impact on your mental and physical well being.

  1. Create a network of positive people who get you.

Positive, happy people, support and motivate you to achieve your goals. They help and encourage you and ask nothing in return. They give FSSPC – feedback with specific suggestions for positive change. They’re approachable and empathetic. You can feel positive energy when you’re around them.

One of my favorite quotes from Mother Teresa illustrates how to attract positive people into your life: Be the Change You Want to See in the World.

Be the person who is positive and supportive of others and you will draw more helpful and positive people into your life. You attract what you put out into your world.

Another way to find like-minded people is to seek out those individuals who are connecting with the things that you want in your life. Don’t be afraid to reach out. A great way to do this is to offer help. Being of service to others will boost your positivity and connect you to people who lift-you up.

Now I’d like to hear from you…

Who has had a positive influence on your life and how have they helped you? Please share your thoughts and ideas in the box below to help others in this one-line community. Remember, one of the best ways you learn is through the experiences of others.

A more positive and happier life is within your reach. It starts by BELIEVING IN YOURSELF and taking small STEPS EVERYDAY in the direction you want to go. I know YOU CAN DO IT!!

Lina – this is right on! One thing I do from time to time is re-evaluate people’s outlooks d attitudes. If they are negative I move on

Your right – life is way too short to have people in your circle that have negative attitudes. Thanks Sarah!

Point blank, negative people will suck the life out of you! Like the Death Eaters from the Harry Potter series, these people will try and drive you into the ground with their negative thoughts and actions. Finding that group of people that can cut through all of this and remain positive are the people you should associate with. In doing so your own negativity will be turned around to create something positive. And when you are doing something positive in your life or in the lives of others you will be more at peace with the world around you!
